Article summary

This article provides detailed instructions on how to create a labour market testing (LMT) compliant job ad. Creating an LMT-compliant job ad involves adhering to specific standards set by the Australian Government Department of Home Affairs.

What is labour market testing (LMT) and who is it for?

Labour market testing (LMT) in Australia is a regulatory requirement for employers who seek to sponsor foreign workers for temporary or permanent positions through various visa programs, such as the Temporary Skill Shortage (TSS) visa, the Employer Nomination Scheme (ENS) visa, and other employer-supported visas.

LMT is designed to ensure that Australian employers give priority to local workers before hiring foreign workers. As part of the LMT process, employers are obliged to advertise job vacancies in specific ways to demonstrate that they have actively tried to fill positions with qualified Australian citizens or permanent residents.

Employers typically need to advertise job vacancies in Australia for a specified period, usually at least four weeks, through various channels such as national recruitment websites, newspapers, or professional associations. The advertisements must contain specific details about the job requirements and be accessible to potential Australian candidates.

By enforcing LMT requirements, the Australian government aims to safeguard the interests of the local workforce and ensure that job opportunities are first made available to Australian residents or citizens. Compliance with LMT regulations is a crucial aspect of the visa application process for employers sponsoring foreign workers, and failure to adhere to these requirements can result in visa refusals or other penalties.

If you intend to fulfill LMT requirements by advertising your job vacancies across various platforms, including multiple job boards and Workforce Australia, you should enable this feature when posting your job advertisement. Enabling this feature ensures that your job ad is distributed widely across different channels to reach a broader pool of potential candidates, increasing your chances of finding the right candidates for your job vacancies while demonstrating your dedication to supporting the local workforce.

Create your LMT compliant job ad

An LMT compliant job ad differs from a standard job ad. Each component and feature available for creating an LMT job ad is explained below.

Click the Post a Job button, which you can find at the top of the website, and you will be navigated to the job ad form, where you can begin creating your job ad.

Posting a job ad is a two-step process. First, you’ll draft the job ad, where you’ll specify details such as the job title, description, requirements, and other important information. You can review and refine the ad as you go. Once the ad is drafted and ready for publication, you’ll move to the second step where you publish your ad. Here you can confirm the ad details and make any final adjustments before publishing. The two-step process ensures that job ads are thoroughly prepared and effectively distributed to attract suitable candidates. Once the job is published it will be visible to job seekers on relevant platforms and potential candidates will be able to apply for the position.

Now we’ll look at the specifics of creating an LMT job ad.

  • Job Ad Template

A job ad can either be created from scratch or selected from a saved job ad template from the dropdown list. Initially, this dropdown will be empty until you choose to save any job ad as a template (an option available at the bottom of the form) and then it will appear in the dropdown list. Saving a job ad as a template allows you to reuse it (you can make edits) if a similar job ad needs to be published at a later date, saving you time.

The ANZSCO (Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations) code is a classification system used in Australia and New Zealand to categorise occupations for various statistical and administrative purposes. It assigns a unique code to each occupation based on the tasks and duties typically associated with it. Once you have entered the job title and moved to the ANZSCO code field, an integrated AI system will provide a suggested code for the job. Please review this suggestion before publishing the job ad. If the suggested code is incorrect, you can search and select the correct code by opening the dropdown list.
To search for ANZSCO codes, please visit the Australian Bureau of Statistics website.

  • AI Job Advertisement Assistant

The AI job advertisement assistant is designed to save you time and effort while maximising the effectiveness of your recruitment efforts. Instead of spending hours crafting a job ad manually, the AI system swiftly generates a job ad, saving you time by automating the process. Once the job ad is generated, you have the opportunity to review and edit it as needed. You can ensure that the content accurately reflects the requirements of the job and personalise the ad to make it more appealing to potential candidates.

Click the Try Now button, and a text prompt interface will emerge with a default prompt. If the default prompt aligns with your needs, simply click the Generate button, and the AI system will start working, suggesting a job summary and job description for your ad. Alternatively, you can modify the default prompt text to better suit your requirements. After making your edits, click the Generate button again, and the AI system will propose a job summary, job description, benefits, task and responsibilities and qualification and experience based on the prompt.
